For three brothers who live together, the dinner table is both a place for family and a battlefield. When Steve (Dayo Wong) learns that his younger brother Bernard (Louis Cheung Ka-chung) is dating his ex-girlfriend Monica (Stephy Tang), he nurses his wounded pride by pursuing a relationship with Ah Meow (Lin Min-chen). Meanwhile, Lung (Peter Chan Charm-man) debates whether or not to marry his longtime girlfriend, Josephine (Ivana Wong). The three troubled siblings therefore find their dinnertimes an occasion for staging arguments and testing the limits of their relationships. A sensitive portrait of daily life in Hong Kong that weaves together sharp observations about love, family, and life, Table For Six deftly balances sentimentalism with comedy. Dayo Wong, Louis Cheung, and Peter Chan highlight the Chen brothers’ different personalities through their excellent performances, while the characters played by Stephy Tang, Lin Min-chen, and Ivana Wong epitomise different feminine perspectives on matters of love. An outstanding and heartwarming urban comedy that also frankly examines the conflicts and struggles in family and love, the film ultimately calls for understanding and the need to treasure the bonds that tie us together.

2) 6 April (8:00pm): Forbidden City Cop (1996)

Ling Ling Fat (Stephen Chow) is part of an elite imperial guard assigned to protecting the emperor. For his utter lack of martial arts or undercover skills, he is an inventor of fantastic creations and gadgets, but his talents are not appreciated at court, and he is thus forced to bide his time as a gynaecologist. His long-awaited opportunity to prove himself and serve his country arrives when he uncovers a major conspiracy by invaders from north of the border. With the support of his loving wife (Carina Lau Ka-ling), Ling Ling Fat saves the day through ingenious use of his inventions.
A wildly entertaining tale that suggests the power of brains over brawn, Forbidden City Cop is an imaginative mix of action, comedy, and science fiction, and in many ways epitomises Chow’s riotously fantastical mo lei tau (nonsensical) comic style. Not only does Chow share excellent chemistry with his onscreen spouse Carina Lau, other supporting players such as Law Ka-ying, Kingdom Yuen King-dan, and Cheung Tat-ming also give unforgettable turns. The result is an endlessly funny parody of the 007 series that also at the same time smartly deconstructs traditional images of heroism in wuxia films. Forbidden City Cop is one of Chow’s most important works in the 1990s that showcases the maturity of his mo lei tau comedy. A great box office hit, the film is now rightly regarded as one of Hong Kong’s classic comedies.
