Hong Kong’s action-filled martial arts films have always been a favourite genre of international film fans. The Hong Kong Film Archive has hand-picked over 20 martial arts films from the 1970s to the present, including period wuxia, kung fu, modern action, and even action fantasy. They showcase how Hong Kong martial arts films draw from the rich foundations of Chinese culture and traditional martial arts, absorbing from various styles and philosophies, before blending in elements of popular culture. Through constantly innovative approaches to combining film techniques with genre aesthetics, Hong Kong martial arts filmmakers have dazzled audiences worldwide with some of the most unique, exciting, and multifarious works in international cinema. The programme opens with a 4K restoration of Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983) and closes with The Grandmaster (2013). Both films will be shown at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre's Grand Theatre. Don't miss them!
To inaugurate ‘Of Fists and Swords – Kaleidoscope of Hong Kong Martial Arts Films’, three young Hong Kong martial arts athletes—Lydia Sham, Lau Chi-lung and Samuei Hui will do a wushu performance and demonstration on 27 March in the Foyer of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. And coach Wong Chi-kwong will interact with the audience on site.
The programme is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The LCSD has all along promoted Chinese history and culture through organising an array of programmes and activities to enable the public learn more about broad and profound Chinese culture.
